xxSOLDxx Rifleman's powder horn dated 1806
Rifleman's Powder Horn signed William Brown Jr. 1806
This is a large untouched Federal period tab ended powder horn with scrimshaw consisting of lovely overall folk art designs plus it is signed and dated. It is signed "Made by William Brown Jr. 1806" and in addition, the protuding ears (a holdover 18th century feature) is scrimmed "W.B.Jr.". It measures 14 3/4" long across the curve from the spout end to the tab ear extreme and the butt is a little over 3" in diameter. The scrimshaw consists of a circle and icicle design circumscribing the butt end and there are three ribanded strips each edged with half circle fringes. The middle riband has the above mentioned scrimshawed name and date. In addition, there is a small single masted sailing ship, a scrimmed flintlock long rifle, as well as a heart, grape vines and grape clusters. The best feature is a rare large (2 1/2" wide x 2" tall) folky "chicken" eagle with shielded breast of the early Federal period. The best of the best folk art!!! **SOLD**
Condition: Excellent. It is attic found and has the best patinae.
