xxSOLDxx. AMERICAN REVOLUTIONARY WAR SWORD Attributed to Jeremiah Snow $2950.00

Circa 1775-1785

This short saber measures 32 1/4 inches overall with a 26 1/2 inch single fuller blade. This sword fits nearly exactly the specifications listed in a "Man at Arms" article by E. Andrew Mowbray entitled "In Search of Jeremiah Snow--Revolutionary War Sword Cutler". This short saber has a 26 1/2 inch single fuller blade which matches exactly Mowbray's description. The brass hilt is "of the stirrup variety. the metal portions of the hilt are of heavy flat brass. A small urn shaped pommel is featured... A pair of 1/2" ferrules are employed above and below the grip. A simple button-like quillon is used." again, exactly matching Mowbray's description of Snow swords. This grip is made of cherry, spiral carved and swells toward the blade, exactly matching Mowbray's description of Snow swords. This saber has a full incised black leather scabbard, missing its brass mounts, but the scabbard matches Mowbray's scabbard description: "their (surviving) scabbards are quite rare...is of black leather with an elaborate diamond pattern tooled in for most of its length", exactly matching this sword's scabbard. Snow worked in Springfield, Massachussetts during the Revolution and was born Ca 1735. There is only a few known signed Snow sword and the touchmark on the brass guard exactly matches the "J. Snow" touchmark on a number of signed silver spoons.**SOLD**

Note, Snow urn pommel swords are easy to distinguish from other urn pommel Rev War swords because the urn is 2/3 the size of other makers. Also, the grip is cherry and spiral carved and never had a leather covering or brass wire groove inserts.

Condition:  Very Good. I would call this sword "Excellent" except that the brass scabbard mounts are missing.  I have owned several Snow swords over the decades and this one is probably in the best condition of all of them, with even the original scabbard intact (but brass mounts missing). The cherry grip is complete and unblemished with its original surface.  The brass hilt has not been polished or touched and is "in the black".

A copy of Mowbray's article will be included with this sword.
