REVOLUTIONARY WAR PERIOD AMERICAN HANGER/SWORD
Circa 1780-1790
This offering is an "in the black", 18th century American hanger. It is brass mounted with an overall length measuring 32 1/4 inches overall and a 26 1/4 inch single fuller blade. Although the sword was found in Virginia, it was probably made in Philadelphia because of the beading around the lower edge of the urn pommel and the lower edge of the capstan. This beading is typical of 18th century Philadelphia silver. The sword is in pristine untouched condition with brass mounts normally found on small swords and has a cast brass knuckle guard and crossguard. It also has a disk shaped sheet brass cross guard with a neatly filed engrailed edge. The single fuller blade is of the type imported to America late in the Revolutionary War.
References: A very similarly mounted sword is pictured in Dan Hartzler's book "Silver Mounted Swords The Latimer Family Collection",Pg. 116.
Condition: Excellent, as found with a few ancient knicks in the blade (see pics).
