18th CENTURY SILVER HILT HORSEMANS SABER

Silver Hilted, Probably American Circa 1775-1785

This is a well made silver mounted stirrup guard cavalry saber measuring 35 3/8 inches long overall with a 30 3/4 inch imported Germanic triple fuller blade. The blade has "man-in-the-moon", stars, and sunburst engraving as well as the makers name which appears to be "Hirsch". These triple fuller blades were manufactured in Alscace/Loraine and other parts of Germany and imported by the thousands to American to be mounted here during the Revolutionary War. The coin silver mounts are simple and sturdy with a sheet silver counterguard and downturned quillon with a sturdy cast silver knuckle guard which has a medial ridge. The well formed silver capped pommel has a recessed silver capstan washer fastening the peened blade. The walnut grip is neatly incise carved in a checker board pattern with small chip carved enhancements to the carving.  No scabbard.

Condition:  V. Good. There is an ancient soldered repair where the knucklebow meets the counterguard (see pics). The blade has some scattered light pitting
