xxSOLDxxAMERICAN Rev War PERIOD HORSMAN'S SABER
Iron Mounted Heavy Dragoon Saber
This was probably made in America, but possibly Britain, most likely during the American Revolution. The saber measures 39 1/2 inches overall, with 33 1/2 inch single fuller blade which is 1 3/8 inches at its widest and measures 1/4 inch at its spine, and has a 6 inch false edge. The single fuller is close to the spine of the blade and is rather crudely channeled indicating American make. The iron mounts are neatly forged but again more crudely forged than you would typically find on swords of British manufacture. The iron semi-basket hilt has a forged ovoid iron guard and three neatly forged and filed branches forming the knuckle guard . It has a spherical iron pommel measuring 1 3/8 inches in diameter with a mushroom shaped iron capstan measuring 1/2 inch in diameter. The three knuckle bow branches are neatly forge lap welded onto the ovoid iron guard with the outboard welds being neatly filed while the inside forge welds are left unfiled. Again, the neat but somewhat crude forging, welding, and filing strongly point to American war time manufacture. The grip is leather covered with iron ferrules and with flat copper ribbon wrap. The wrap would in all likelyhood have been brass, not copper if it were British. **SOLD**
Condition: VG/EX for its age and use. The blade is mottled dark grey with some pitting at the very tip and otherwise lesser scattered pitting. About 1/8 inch of the tip is gone. The leather grip is 70% complete and the copper ribbon is 100%.
