KENTUCKY RIFLE Attributed to Jacob Angstat

Kutztown/Allamaengel Pennsylvania School

This rifle was probably made by Jacob Angstat (1783-1843) circa 1825, third generation rifle maker of the famous Angstat family of the Kutztown school of makers. This brass mounted figured maple full stock rifle has a brass unengraved two piece patchbox with the unusual feature of having incise carved parallel lines in place of sideplates. There are triple carved incised parallel beauty lines carved the length of the barrel on either side as well as the unusual identically carved beauty line carved the length of the toe line. There is also incise "chip" carving around the barrel tang and relief, incise, and chip carved "C" scrolls behind the cheekpiece. A very folky, quirky rifle from the area (Kutztown) and family (Angsat) whose rifles are considered by serious long rifle collectors to be the "folkiest" and "Dutchiest" of Kentucky rifle makers. The rifle's overall length is 55 inches and the octagon to round .48 cal. barrel is 39 1/4 inches. Included with this rifle is a period (circa 1825) blue painted wooden fitted case with its original lock and key.

Condition: Excellent with it original reddish "fiddle finish" typical of that area of Pennsylvania. Original barrel length and with its original roller frizzen flintlock.
