xxHOLDxx REVOLUTIONARY WAR PERIOD AMERICAN "COS" MUSKET

Classic Committee of Safety Musket Circa 1775-1783

This is a classic American musket circa 1775-1783 which was undoubtedly fabricated early in the Revolutionary War period, prior to 1779 when the Continental Army was (by then) mostly armed with French supplied Charleville muskets, and/or standardized muskets, the specifications of which were designated by Continental Congress  in November of 1775. This musket has an American cherry full stock in the Brown Bess form but with a variety of parts supplied by old F&I War donor parts from old French Model 1728 and 1763 part as well as Brown Bess parts. This muskets consists of an octagon to round 43 1/4 inch .69cal barrel (shortened slightly from a 1728 Charleville), a lock, also from a 1728 French Charleville musket, (in its original flintlock configuration) with a flash pan-to-frizzen bridle and a goose neck hammer, an iron buttplate from a 1728 Charleville with a long 5 inch finial, and an iron trigger guard from a Mod. 1763 Charleville.  The barrel is fastened with three iron barrel bands which were probably American blacksmith fabricated.  The brass sideplate is from an English 2nd Model Brown Bess. This musket comes complete with an associated 17 1/4 inch period bayonet. The original flintlock is marked with a crown over S E over B, signifying St.Etienne armory. and the specific smith's indistinct markings. The inside of the lockplate has "Charleville" stamped.  **HOLD**

Condition:  Very Good.  This musket has a old historic finish and its original flintlock in its original flint configuration. There are a couple of minor wood restorations above the forward part of the lock.  The associated bayonet has serious pitting on the last 1 1/4" of the tip.
