POWDER HORN SIGNED AND DATED 1776 $ 950
"Elisha Fox His Horn 1776"
This Revolutionary War used powder horn measures 13 1/2 inches across the curve, 16 1/2 inches around the outside curve, with its pine butt measuring 2 7/8 inches. The neck is nicely faceted with a double ring separating the neck from the body. The horn lists the owner's name and key date: "Elisha Fox His Horn 1776" and the body has scrimshawed a total of five sailing vessels, including two and three masted tall ships as well as a sloop rigged ship. The engraving also includes a house and church. The horn is so well preserved that it has its neatly made original stopper.
Elisha Fox is listed in the DAR Patriot Index as having served as a Captain from Connecticut during the Revolutionary War who was born December 15, 1743 and died April 19, 1800. In addition in the National Archives, Elisha Fox is listed as having served in Connecticut's Regiment of Foot commanded by Colonel Henry Sherburn with the rank of Private and later on as a Corporal from February 1777 through January 1779.
Condition: Excellent with no cracks, but a single small insect bite measuring about 3/8" x 18" and does not penetrate through. The engraving is light with wear in the normal places. I'm guessing that at some point the carry tab extension of the horn at the butt broke off.
