xxSOLDxx SEIGE OF BOSTON POWDER HORN-LEVI PEASE

Wonderful large and rare scrimshawed "Seige of Boston" powder horn with the owner's name Levi Pease on it.  Circa 1775-1776.  This horn is pictured in R.L.Wilson's book "STEEL CANVAS The Art of American Arms", Pg 38.  Many patriotic symbols, including an American patriot holding a scroll titled "MAG" symbolising the Magna Carta and the beginning of British citizens' rights.  It also has the phrase "LIBERTY IS MY PROPERTY", a folky British lion with "LION I AM" scrimmed below it plus a "Coat of Arms" above "LEVI PEASE".  The unique thing about this horn is that a mounted cavalry or dragoon troop is scrimmed around the lower half of the horn, with the leader having a drawn sword and three rows of three mounted troopers abreast, one flying the unit standard, and the other 8 brandishing raised dragoon pistols.  Each of the ten troopers is scrimmed as an individual with unique features such as two are pictured with long hair flowing, and another one with a long neatly ribbon-tied queue. **SOLD**

Condition:  Excellent.  Nice mellow old original yellow/brown scrimshawed horn surface.  Length 19 1/4" around the double curve and the walnut butt is 3 5/8" diameter at its widest and is fastened with wooden pins.  The butt may have been cleaned at one time but retains a beautiful patina.  There is an obviously spurious date of "1750" near the engrailed collar and a 1" crack in the base of the horn running from one of the fastening pins.
