Raised Carved Rifle attributed to Lancaster Maker Untouched Condition
Golden age rifle with tiger maple raised and incise carved original surface stock. The full octagon unsigned rifled barrel measures 43 3/4". The rifle measures 59 3/4" overall and has a beautifully engraved four piece brass patchbox, a engraved brass toeplate, brass sideplate, triggerguard, nosecap, and three ramrod ferrules. In addition, it has two silver inlays, a "hunters star" engraved cheekpiece oval inlay and an oval unengraved wrist escutcheon. This rifle is "in the black" with original untouched reddish brown varnish wood surface and green/black untouched brass surfaces. The octagon barrel has a deep untouched brown/black surface. Beautiful raised carved "ruffled" C and S scroll carving behind the cheekpiece in a pattern which Kindig calls John Hagi's signature pattern. In addition, there is incise carving under the cheekpiece, around the barrel tang, and volute carving on either side of the rear ramrod ferrule. There is a deep incised beauty line which parrallels the ramrod channel on either side. A nearly identical J Hagy rifle sold in James Julia's October 2013 auction (Lot 2380).
