POWDER HORN-YORK COUNTY SCREW TIP
Circa 1795-1820
Scarce and desirable York County Pennsylvania screw tip powder horn which measures 10 inches across the curve. This horn dates probably to the first quarter of the 19th century and is complete including (I believe) the original screw tip and bulbous stopper. The turned, chip carved, domed butt plug measures 3 inches in diameter and is classic York County in design and execution. The horn's surface is original and is golden color near the butt fading to a deep green toward the spout. There are double incised beauty lines both at the butt end and the spout end. Both forged suspension staples are present and original.
Condition: Very Good. Surface is original on both the horn proper and the cherry butt. The turnings and chip carvings on the butt are crisp. There is a thumbnail sized, 1/8" chip out of the horn where it meets the turned butt. The butt has a small stable crack measuring 5/8" from where it joins the horn to where it peters out.
