REV WAR AMERICAN OFFICERS SHORT SABER

Circa 1775-1783

This "D" guard, iron mounted short saber is entirely fabricated by some local colonial blacksmith during the Revolutionary War. As per Neuman, "The saber was designed for a cutting stroke (and was) carried by most officers as their fighting sword."  This saber measures 32 inches overall with a 27 inch by 1 1/2 inch hand forged "flattie" curved blade with no fullers. The mounts are hand forged and cast pewter.  The turned cherry grip is flanked by cast pewter ferrules.  The hand forged "D" guard terminates in a beautiful high cross guard ending in a beautiful scrolled volute representing the quillon.

Condition: Very Good, considering its age and use.  Its iron has an ancient surface with light peppering throughout. The blade surface has its old, period surface but its edge was probably touched up some time in the 20th century. The peening at the "pommel" has sprung away from the D guard end-terminal.
