REVOLUTIONARY WAR SCRIMSHAW POWDER HORN
Classic Professionally Made Rev War Horn
This is a wonderfully made and engraved powder horn with "IVERY SOULEs HORN NOVEMBERY 25 1776" boldly engraved on the horn's body. The horn is a beautiful golden color with a recessed and engrailed throat and measures 13 inches on the outside curve, and 11 3/4 inches across the horn, with a 3 inch diameter pine butt. The horn's body is fully engraved with the above inscription as well as demi-lune engraving around the recessed throat and faceted and ring carved tip. In addition to the owners name and key date, the body is fully engraved with pine tree with 7 birds, vines with alternating grapes and tulips as well as a hunter in frock coat, tri-corn hat and musket pursuing a deer.
Soule is a very old New England name, the first one, George Soule,, having arrived on the Mayflower in December, 1620. Ivery Soule is listed in the US Military Records as having received a pension in the 1840 records and classified in the oldest age group "over 45" having applied Mar. 4, 1832 as a natural born white in New Hampshire.
Condition: Very Good, with only one flaw, that being a 3/4 inch stable crack emanating from the butt (see pics). Surface is original with a excellent mellow golden color. Some of the scrimshaw is worn, particularly around the base.
