REVOLUTIONARY WAR SHORT SABER

4th Quarter of the 18th Century

American or English short saber measures 33 inches overall with a curved 28 inch broad single fuller blade and with a 7 inch false edge. I believe this is an American made sword because the hand forged blade has an unschooled extreme curve, not typically found on English swords. This sword has  heavy cast brass mountings including a stirrup shaped knuckle bow which is chamfered and it has a tall brass octagon pommel which Dan Hartzler in his book "Silver Mounted Swords, The Latimer Collection" refers to as the "forerunner to the pillow (pommel)". There is an identically mounted sword in Hartzler's book pictured on Page 272, Fig. 449 which is in the Latimer Collection (see last pic). The Latimer sword has a Federal period imported blade. I believe both this sword and the Latimer sword were mounted in the same shop. This sword has a black horn laterally ribbed grip with a swell center. This sword has a really neat hand forged iron field repair at the pommel end of the knuckle bow where it enters the pommel (see pics).

Condition:  Very good . Old, original patina, not polished and or cleaned. There is a couple of minor, old stable de-laminations on the horn grip (see pics). Great in period forged iron field repair on the knuckle bow. No scabbard.
