UPPER SUSQUEHANNA SCHOOL LONG RIFLE
Incise and Relief Carved
This beautiful full tiger maple stocked flintlock Kentucky rifle measures 58 3/4 inches long overall with a 41 1/2 inch .38 cal full octagon rifled barrel. The rifle dates circa 1825-1830. The full tiger maple stock features a well figured piece of wood with uniform tigering throughout the length of the stock and sports 10 German silver inlays as well as 2 brass inlays, including 8 German silver barrel pin escutcheons. This rifle is brass mounted featuring a nicely engraved four piece patchbox with typical Upper Susquehanna "open work" sideplates, but has a unique finial which consists of a large engraved "C" scroll which mimics the Kuntz style finial design but does not have exposed wood in the inside of the "C" but rather is closed and is crosshatch engraved to simulate a void. This is really a unique and desirable patchbox for a Susquehanna school rifle. The incise and relief carving behind the cheekpiece is well executed and consists of a "S" scroll back to back with a large "C" scroll. This rifle is in its original flintlock configuration.
Condition: Excellent with no wood replacement nor any major flaws or restoration whatsoever. The stock displays an old historic finish. One brass inlay along the lower curve of the butt is missing and is filled with wood. This is just a good honest well done and well preserved late Golden Age flintlock rifle.
