xxSOLDxx 17th or 18th C.SPIKE AXE-ORIGINAL HAFT
18th Century Spike Axe-ex Jim Dresslar Collection
Great early 18th century hand forged native American spike axe probably Iroquoian. Probably made by a white blacksmith either in the 17th century or early in the 18th century. The head design is derived from medieval European battle axes and very early. Length: 15 5/8" Head: 8 5/8" Blade: 3 3/8" Spike: 4 3/8" from the haft. This is completely original and in untouched condition with the original mottled, multi-layered oxidation on the head and deep patina on the haft with original or very early red paint on the haft. There are similar axes pictured in Hartzler & Knowles book "INDIAN TOMAHAWKS & FRONTIERSMEN BELT AXES", Pg 58. One of my favorite pieces from the Lymans. **SOLD**
Condition: Untouched, as found, "attic" condition. There is an ancient split in the haft (pictured) running from the lower rim of the head, 1/8" deep, and 5" long before disappearing. The split does not effect the integrity of the haft. Worn paint on the haft.
