xxSOLDxx 19th Century Native American Shooting Bag
Indian shooting bag, 19th century, with beaded strap and 5 silver conch flap weights.
"This outstanding native American shooting bag was found in a 19th century storage trunk along with an Indian Wars cavalry uniform. It is untouched and in excellent condition for its age and usage. The bag itself is made of native tanned buffalo or pig hide and is made of one piece with the flap integral with the bag. The overall length of the bag is 25 1/4" from the apex of the strap to the bottom of the bag. The bag proper measures 6 3/4" wide by 8" tall. The original beaded strap is lazy stitched (4 stitches to the row) onto hide which is backed with old faded brown (or possibly originally red faded to brown) trade cloth. The beaded strap is attached to the bag with two 19th century large (7/8" dia.) brass buttons. The flap of the bag is weighted down by 5 "star burst" design silver concho buttons. The beadwork pattern appears to be Cheyene or possibly Sioux. I would tenatively date this to the 3rd quarter of the 19th century but it could be somewhat earlier. Please note the listing is for this Native bag only, the last picture depicts this item with a couple of others which are listed separately (or will be soon).xxHOLDxx
Condition: Very Good to Excellent for its age and native use. Some bead loss as per pictures. One side of strap re-attached to bag in modern times.
