xxSOLDxx. BOWIE KNIFE 19th CENTURY

American Hand Forged Knife with Original Sheath

Very well made, hand forged American knife with the original sheath. The knife measures 13 1/2 inches overall with the clip point blade measures 8 7/8 inches long and 1 1/2 inches wide and 1/8 inches thick with a 5 inch false edge. Aesthetically beautifully designed. The antler grip measures 4 inches long and about 1 3/8 inches in diameter. The blade is fixed with a tang running through the grip and is peened to firmly secure the blade to the grip.  The crossguard is made of heavy cast brass in a pointed oval shape, measuring 3 inches by 1 inch. The same type of thick flat brass end pommel cap is used through which the tang passes and peened.  The original sheath is sturdily made with the core being two sheets of carved wood which is then covered in tanned beaver hide with most of the beaver fur still present.  Harness leather is used as a belt suspension and then is tacked to the wood sheath body.  **SOLD**

Condition:  Excellent for age and use.  Original surface on the blade, brass mounts, antler grip and sheath. The brass crossguard has slight movement.

Provenance: Phil Majerich fur trade collection. A similar knife is pictured in Madison Grant's book "The Knife in Homespun America"  in which he dates the pictured knife 1790-1815. Page 11.
