xxSOLDxx Colonial Period Powderhorn Dated 1771

Lake George School, Possibly Native American

Large cream colored colonial period powderhorn with scrimshaw type associated with the Lake George School, but with a date of "May 4 1771" and the initials "R x S".  The horn measures 14 inches around the outside curve, 12 inches across, and is 3 3/8 inches across the width of the butt.  This horn has five rows of both geometric designs and rococo scrolls running the full length of the horn as well as the date and initials.  This scrim is often associated with native American designs.  In addition to the date, initials, and pattern rows, the horn has a two masted ship as well as a potted stem and floral design that I have seen on another horn dated 1755 of the Lake George school.  The cameo spout is collared by an engrailed rim which steps up to the scrimshawed body.  The pine butt has its original surface with much wear and is encircled with demi-lune scrimmed rings around its circumference.  The spout terminal has a raised ring with double engrailment.  SOLD

Condition:  Well used but excellent condition.  There is a dime sized bruise about 1" up from the butt.  Original surface.
