xxSOLDxx D GUARD HAND FORGED BOWIE KNIFE

Probably Southern, Mid-19th Century

Heavily constructed, hand forged bowie knife measuring 23 3/8 inches long overall with a heavy forged blade measuring 18 3/4 inches.  The grip is deer antler "in the round" with the blade tang running the length of the grip, through the end of the "D" guard and then secured by peening the tang.  The blade is heavily forged, but neatly filed.  The spine runs the length of the blade and is 5/16" at the ricasso, tappering to 1/8", an inch back from the tip.  the forged iron stirrup guard terminates in a forged volute at the terminus of the quillen.

Condition:  Excellent with no notable flaws.  Mottled "salt and pepper" rusting throughout the blade with no pitting, except at the very tip.  Blade was lightly cleaned at one time.
