XXSOLDXX POWDER HORN WITH RARE ORIGINAL SUSPENSION STRAP

Late 18th or First Quarter of 19th Century

This is a very rare period powder horn with its original hand woven suspension strap. Longrifle scholars believe that the powder horn was suspended by its own strap and not attached to a shooting throughout the 18th century. By the 19th century, the horn and bag had evolved such that the horn became suspended to the bag itself rather than being independently suspended.  The powder horn is relatively plain with an octagon faceted spout and three decorative turned rings followed by the turned groove for the suspension strap. The butt is flat , measures 2 7/8" in diameter is made of American white pine, and is attached to the horn with hand forged tacks. There is a brass studd and ring for the rear suspension, all original. The original strap is hand woven  with leather terminal tabs. The woven strap itself is in pretty good shape with exposed cords at the apex of the strap, and quite a bit of deterioration near the butt tab. The horn measures 12 inches across the curve. The strap measures approximately 40 inches overall. The "rig" measures 21 1/2" from the apex of the strap to the bottom of the horn when suspended.**SOLD**
