xxSOLDxx REVOLUTIONARY WAR IDENTIFIED POWDERHORN
Lancaster (Pa) Militia 1778
This powderhorn has the rare feature of name, militia unit, rank and date leaving no guesswork as to the owner. The neat block lettering reads: "SERgt GEO ROSS HIS HORN MADE 1778 LANCASTER MILITIA SECnd BATALn". In addition the the name rank and unit information, this horn exhibits a well done cityscape (presumably of Lancaster) as wells as scrimmed vines, a tulip and daisy as well as a canon. The horn measures 10 1/2 inches across the curve and the neatly turned maple butt measures 2 1/4 inches in diameter. The turned butt carry strap button is removable to more easily fill the horn with powder but unlike most horns with removable buttons, this one is in the form of a wedge (see pics) rather than screwed. **SOLD**
Condition: Very Good to Excellent. All of the scrim is clearly visible and readable despite the fact that there is wear on the outboard side of the horn (it was used as a left hand carry). Unlike most 18th century powderhorns, there are no cracks. There is a small amount of insect damage where the horn butts up agains the turned butt, measuring 5/8" x 1/8".
