xxSOLDxx Sword "AMERICAN LIGHT HORSE" Horseman's Saber
Circa 1784-1800
Classic brass hilted lion head "D" guard American Light Horse horseman saber with an overall length of 39 inches an engraved steel blade measuring 34 inches with an 8 1/2 inch false edge. This sword has the rare and desirable "American Light Horse" engraving on both sides of the blade as well as an eagle with shield and 9 stars. The brass hilt form is associated with cavalry units in the Philadelphia area. Bill Guthman dates these swords circa 1784-1800 in his booklet "U.S. Army Weapons 1784-1794" published for The American Society of Arms Collectors. Guthman further states that they were European made for the American market. Pictured in Guthman's publication on Pg. 59, fig. 22B is a sword with the identical hilt.**SOLD**
Condition: Good. Brass hilt has an old honey patina and is in excellent condition. The obverse blade has light pitting but in generally good condition. The reverse has extensive light pitting, but the engraving is still visible. The peen at the pomel has had restoration with a brass or copper grommet added. (see pics).
