xxSOLDxxScrimshaw Powder Horn 18th Century

Scrimshawed with Map and City Scapes

Nice 18th Century map horn scrimshawed with rivers, several forts, city scapes and two tall ships.  No name or date but definitely 18th century and North American as the flag flying on the fort is the"St. George's cross" flag commonly used by the British in the mid-18th century.  Old mellow golden patina with a wooden pegged pine plug, ringed and faceted throat cameo carving.  12" across the curve with a 3 1/2" diameter butt plug.  Modestly priced.

Condition:  Very Good.  Old yellowed varnish over the horn surface.  Old surface to the butt plug.  There is one 1" crack running from butt into the horn but is very old and stable and there is a 1" x 1/4" area of cracking at the butt which is ancient and stable.
