BOY'S KENTUCKY RIFLE Circa 1830 With Miniature Bag + Horn

Signed: * P * A * on Barrel. Peter Angstat

This is a very rare and wonderful "small made" Kentucky rifle "rig" made for a small boy ages 8 to 10, judging by the rifle's and shooting bag's size.  Although the top rifle flat is only signed "* P * A *", it undoubtedly was made by Peter Angstat a prominent member of the Kutztown Pennsylvania rifle making family. The letters in curcif are separated by simplified snowflakes which is an Angstat characteristic.  The fullstock tiger maple "Roman nose" rifle measures a diminutive 30 inches overall with the full octagon .36 cal. barrel measuring 17 3/4 inches. The rifle is pictured with a full size Angstat rifle for sale elsewhere on this site. Included in this offering is a period "D" shaped shooting bag with a pinwheel incised carving on the flap and a small powderhorn.

Condition: Very Good.  The stock sports its original mellow surface as does the metalwork.  I believe this rifle was originally flint and was converted to percussion when the lock was replaced by a percussion lock. There is a stable crack 1/4" wide on the lock side running from the muzzlecap back for 3 1/2" but all the wood is original (see pics.). Also there is a sliver of wood replaced about 2" long between the top of the lock and the barrel tang. The included shooting bag is in excellent  original condition.
