The horn's body is fully engraved with the above inscription as well as demi-lune engraving around the recessed throat and faceted and ring carved tip. In addition to the owners name and key date, the body is fully engraved with pine tree with 7 birds, vines with alternating grapes and tulips as well as a hunter in frock coat, tri-corn hat and musket pursuing a deer.
Soule is a very old New England name, the first one, George Soule,, having arrived on the Mayflower in December, 1620. Ivery Soule is listed in the National Archives as having served as a private in Capt. Benjamin Nye's Company, under Major Jonas Wilder's Regiment from September 26, 1777 to October18, 1777 in the pivotal Northern Campaign. Ivery Soule is listed in the US Military Records as having received a pension in the 1840 records and classified in the oldest age group "over 45" having applied Mar. 4, 1832 as a natural born white in New Hampshire.
Condition: Very Good, with only one flaw, that being a 3/4 inch stable crack emanating from the butt (see pics). Surface is original with a excellent mellow golden color. Some of the scrimshaw is worn, particularly around the base.
